Fine antique French bronze inkstand from the Empire period (1799-1815), carried by three imposing sea monsters.

An elegant piece of writing culture and an exquisite example of Empire craftsmanship. This solid bronze inkstand is fully executed in classic style and rests on three beautifully crafted sea monsters/dolphins, which powerfully support the bowl. The lid shows richly engraved details and opens to a complete interior with loose inserts - including original ink pot and sand spreader - which significantly increases its collector's value.

Origin & meaning
Empire ink sets like this were used by the elite in the early 19th century and reflect the grandeur of Napoleonic France. The theme of sea monsters and mythological creatures refers to the power of the sea and classical antiquity, popular motifs within the Empire style.

The bronze shows a beautiful, deep patina befitting its age. Traces of use are present but not disturbing; the originality is fully preserved, including the underside with original construction. A fine and complete piece for serious collectors.
