Impressive Asmat bowl from Papua New Guinea - this ceremonial object shows a female figure on one side and an anthropomorphic motif on the other. The exterior is painted with red, black and white pigments, which are remarkably well preserved. Its elongated size and patina make this piece an impressive collector's item.

Origin & meaning
The Saman Ewt River on the Casuarine Coast is known for its refined Asmat carvings. Bowls with figurative ends, such as this one with a female figure and anthropomorphic motif, served as ceremonial status objects and symbolised the connection between the living and the ancestors. Provenance: private collection Amsterdam, purchased from De Zwaan auction house.

Dimensions & condition
Height 10 cm × length 88 cm × width 16.5 cm (weight 0.968 kg). The bowl is in good authentic condition, with clear pigment residue and patina.
