Description
Impressive large Dhyangro Chepang ritual drum from western Nepal, used by shamans from the Magar region. A powerful and authentic object for connoisseurs and collectors.
This particular drum features chains with metal sound elements which add an extra dimension to the sound. The skin shows signs of use and a small hole, but remains well playable. The wooden body is wound with rattan bindings and shows a beautiful, deep patina indicative of ritual use.
The handle at the bottom of the drum was X-shaped and wrapped with animal skin. This construction was practical for holding the drum for long periods during shamanic ceremonies. The sound of the chains and the deep resonance of the skin made the drum an essential instrument in rituals.
