Description

Large and impressive Chancay Cuchimilco statue from Peru (1200-1400 AD), with original pigment remains and a powerful, authentic look.

This striking pottery sculpture depicts the classic cuchimilco-posture, with both arms raised in a protective gesture. The simple, geometric design, subdued expression and traces of black-brown and red pigments emphasise the spiritual character of these ancestral figures from the coastal region of central Peru.

With its soft sand-coloured surface and harmonious proportions, the statue exudes a special tranquillity and monumentality. The decorative band over the head is partially preserved and still clearly shows the hand-painted patterns from the Chancay style. The object is in excellent condition for its age, with only slight signs of age and no repairs. No fluorescent test present.

Origin & meaning
The Chancay culture (c. 1000-1470 AD) was known for its refined ceramics and textile art. Cuchimilco-statues were placed in tombs as protectors of the deceased and symbolised life force and fertility. The raised arms are interpreted as a gesture of protection from evil spirits. This statue is from the in-house collection of Vergulde Kat, acquired at De Zwaan auction house, and constitutes an impressive example of pre-Columbian sculpture.
