Description
Beautiful Chinese blue and white plate from the Yongzheng period (18th century), with a sophisticated performance from the beloved novel "Romance of the Western Chamber".
The scene shows figures in a garden pavilion, framed by floral motifs along the rim. The literary-inspired setting is among the most popular themes in the Chinese porcelain tradition and managed to charm collectors in Europe as early as the 18th century.
Origin & meaning
This plate comes from a Groningen manor farm where Chinese porcelain was actively collected through the VOC in the 18th and 19th centuries. Purchased from Klinkhamer Auction House in Groningen. This provenance underlines the historical value of the piece and makes it particularly attractive to collectors of export porcelain.
