Description
Beautiful Cantonese porcelain lidded dish from the 19th century - richly decorated in famille rose with figures, flowers and birds.
Origin & meaning
This magnificent bowl was made in Canton, an important centre for exporting Chinese porcelain in the 19th century. The decoration is typical of the famous famille rose style, with exuberant scenes of court ladies, flowering peonies, colourful birds and butterflies. Both the lid and the inside are fully painted, making this object not only functional, but also a luxurious showpiece in the dining room or drawing room. The gold knob on the lid reinforces the aura of richness and refinement that made Canton porcelain loved by collectors worldwide.
