Description

Beautiful pair of Ko-Sometsuke bowls from the Ming dynasty, c. 1620/30, with vivid depiction of horses under the moon. A superb example of Chinese export porcelain made especially for the Japanese market.

Origin & meaning
Ko-Sometsuke ('ancient blue and white') was made in Jingdezhen during the late Ming period and was much loved in Japan, where it gained ceremonial and aesthetic value within tea culture. The combination of horses and moon symbolises strength, freedom and harmony with nature.

Dimensions & condition
Diameter: 14 cm - height: 4 cm. Both bowls are in good condition with slight rim fritting, appropriate to age. No chips, hairlines or restorations.
Provenance: Venduehuis The Hague (2023).
