Description

Iconic Chinese export plate with the famous Pronk design 'La Dame au Parasol', Qianlong period, ca. 1740.

This plate shows one of the most recognisable designs from the VOC period: a lady with parasol, accompanied by her servant. Cornelis Pronk designed this scene commissioned by the VOC in the 1730s, and only a limited number of designs were actually executed in porcelain. This Imari variation in blue, red and gold highlights the sophistication of the Chinese painting tradition, adapted to European tastes.

Origin & meaning

The Pronk design 'La Dame au Parasol' is among the most prized motifs within Chinese export porcelain. This specimen was acquired at Rob Michiels Auctions in Bruges and is executed in a vibrant Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red and gold accents. The depiction symbolises refinement and luxury, symbolising the cultural cross-pollination between the Netherlands and China in the 18th century.
