Rare large Qianlong platter with vivid goldfish decoration (ca. 1740), an impressive 34.5 cm wide masterpiece in exceptional condition.
Origin & meaning
The setting of five colourful goldfish is more than just a pretty scene: in Chinese symbolism, goldfish represent abundance, prosperity and good fortune. As a collector, you immediately recognise the appeal of this large format and the sophisticated polychrome enamel. In the 18th century, dishes like these often functioned as prestigious status objects within European collections.
