Description
Elegant set of six Qianlong café au lait bowls from the 18th century. The warm brown glaze and subtle decorations give these miniature bowls a sophisticated and charming look, despite their signs of use.
Origin & meaning
Café au lait porcelain was particularly popular in the 18th century and was often exported for the European market. The subtle, warm glaze colour combines beautifully with the delicate hand-painted decorations in famille rose and red gold. This set of six small bowls (7-9 cm) shows how Chinese craftsmen knew how to produce top quality even in small sizes. The type was used for tea and small dishes and is sought after by collectors today for its rare colour and historical value.
Provenance
Purchased at De Zwaan auction house.
Dimensions & condition
Diameter 7-9 cm each.
The set consists of six bowls with variation in decor: two with lids (including one with chip, one bowl with crack), one bowl with famille rose decoration and hairline, and three bowls with red gold decoration. All pieces show light signs of use and age but possess an attractive, collectible charm.
