Description
Nice large "Cuckoo in the House" plate from the late Qianlong period (ca. 1780-1790), diameter 35 cm.
An exceptional piece of Chinese porcelain, richly decorated with a delicate underglaze blue decoration of a bird in a window opening, surrounded by flowers, bamboo and architectural elements. The generous size of 35 cm makes this plate particularly rare: most known specimens are considerably smaller. This makes it a real eye-catcher and an opportunity for the serious collector.
Origin & meaning
This plate is from the late Qianlong period and bears the iconic 'Cuckoo in the House' motif. In Western antiques trade, this designation denotes a bird appearing in a window-a decoration that was popular from the 18th century onwards and is mentioned in VOC carvings from 1789. The piece was purchased from the Venduehuis in The Hague, further underlining its authenticity.
Dimensions
Diameter: 35 cm. Condition: excellent condition with only two small edge chips and some typical baking flaws. Large copies of this motif are often valued considerably higher in the international market, further emphasising the collector's value of this plate.
