Rare polychrome Delft blue plaque with fine chinoiserie decor, made in the Netherlands around 1740.
This octagonal wall plaque depicts a lively scene in the chinoiserie style, executed in a rich palette of blue, green, manganese, yellow and red. The depiction shows elegant figures in a garden landscape with pavilion, flowers, birds and playful details such as a boy playing with a kite. The balance between European and oriental motifs makes this piece a highlight of 18th-century Delft pottery. The signature RDI on the back gives the plaque extra authenticity and collectible value.
Origin & meaning. In the mid-18th century, Delft experienced a heyday of colourful pottery, with oriental representations and garden scenes appealing to the European elite. Chinoiserie, the European interpretation of Asian motifs, was popular as wall decoration and brought an exotic atmosphere to interiors. Purchased from Venduehuis The Hague, this plaque represents the refined arts and crafts that made Delft internationally famous.
Dimensions. 31 × 31 × 2 cm. The object has not been restored and shows the typical wear and glaze losses befitting its age.
