Origin & meaning
The statue is marked with the blue mark of Fürstenberg. On the underside is written in gold: "Capitano (Modell von Feilner) aus der Commedia dell'arte Nr 94 handgemalt H Hagedorn". This makes it clear that the object was made to a design by Simon Feilner and hand-painted by H. Hagedorn. Capitano is an iconic character from Italian popular comedy: a boastful mercenary whose bravado often lands him in comical situations. For collectors of both porcelain and theatre history, this is a unique and expressive piece.
