Impressive bronze tiger from Japan, signed by Tsunemitsu, Meiji period, 70 cm long. The tiger is depicted in powerful pose with open mouth, muscular anatomy and finely elaborated fur. The warm patina highlights the naturalistic details and dynamics of this monumental sculpture.

Origin & meaning
The sculpture bears the signature 光常 (Tsunemitsu), a Meiji master of bronze casting known for his realistic animal sculptures. His work belongs to the tradition of the great Meiji studio art and is loved by collectors of Japanese bronze. Similar tigers by Tsunemitsu are appreciated internationally in galleries and specialised collections.

In Japanese art, the tiger symbolises courage, strength and protection against evil. During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japanese bronzework reached a peak in craftsmanship and refinement, and the tiger became a powerful symbol within this artistic tradition.
