Description

Elegant Kangxi blue-and-white “kraak” plate (20 cm) from the 1662-1722 period.

This sophisticated board shows a seated meiren (lady) in a garden in the centre, with a table and pine tree. The border is divided into kraak panels with flowers and objects. The reverse is marked with a lingzhi symbol, the sacred mushroom of immortality.

Origin & meaning
Kraak style plates from the Kangxi period were popular export porcelain. The word "kraak" refers to the Portuguese carraca ships (in Dutch "kraak") that brought this porcelain to Europe in the 16th-17th century. The setting of an elegant lady in a garden symbolises harmony, refinement and scholarship. The lingzhi mark adds auspicious meaning: symbol of long life and prosperity. This plate reflects the high-quality painting and craftsmanship of the Kangxi kilns.
