Description
Origin & meaning. This blue and white plate from the Kangxi period (Qing dynasty, c. 1700) combines floral sophistication with animal playfulness. A rich floral decoration unfolds in the central field, while the scalloped border cartouches alternately show rabbits and flowers. In Chinese imagery, the rabbit is considered a symbol of fertility, prosperity and long life. The underside bears a central underglaze blue mark in the form of a conch shell (shell) - one of the Eight Buddhist Happiness Symbols, symbolising spiritual wealth and the spread of wisdom. Such plates were manufactured in the 17th and early 18th centuries for both the domestic market and for export to Europe, where they found great appreciation.
Size & condition. Diameter: 21 cm. Weight: approx. 0.33 kg. The plate is in fair condition: a hairline in the glaze and some small edge chips, appropriate to its age. The foot ring shows slight wear, confirming its authenticity. The deep cobalt blue is still bright and the decoration beautifully visible. A charming and collectible object that will stand out both in a display case and on the wall.
