Origin & meaning
This image comes from Thailand and dates from the 19th century or earlier. The abhayamudra is one of the Buddha's most recognisable hand gestures, with both hands raised as a gesture of reassurance and inner strength. Such monumental statues were often placed in temples and served both ritual and protective functions.
The property was acquired through Auction house De Zwaan, Amsterdam (2023), a reputable source confirming authenticity and quality.
Dimensions & condition
The image measures 85.5 cm high and 34 cm wide. The condition is good, with normal wear and minor signs of use as to be expected with age. These add to the historical charm.
A monumental temple piece that takes any collection or interior to the next level with its serene look and size.
