Description
Spectacular Malangan funerary mask from New Ireland (Papua New Guinea), with imposing wings, birds, shell inlay and fibre drape.
Origin & meaning
Malangan masks are among Oceania's most impressive ritual arts. They were used during funeral ceremonies to accompany the soul of the deceased and honour the power of the ancestors. This large mask is a feast for the eyes: beautifully painted, with shell inlays in the eyes and as teeth, a fibre robe, two birds at the nose and imposing wing shapes on either side. A real eye-catcher in any collection of tribal art. Provenance: De Zwaan auction house (2024).
