This elegant lime spatula (lime spatula) is a beautiful example of Massim wood carving from Papua New Guinea. The handle is decorated with geometric patterns in white lime inlay, while the top ends in a stylised human head - a typical motif within the Trobriand region. The combination of deep black wood and light inlay creates a striking contrast and emphasises the ritual function of the object.

Origin & meaning
The lime spatula was used in conjunction with a lime box when chewing betel nut, an important social ritual within the Massim cultures of the Trobriand Islands. This piece is from the collection of Jac Hoogerbrugge, who collected it during his field research in Oceania in the 1960s-1970s. His meticulous documentation makes this spatula extra valuable for collectors of authentic Oceanic art.

The collection of Jac Hoogerbrugge (Netherlands, 1930-2020) was built up between the 1960s and 1980s during extensive travels through Africa and Oceania. Hoogerbrugge was known for his accurate field notes and eye for artistic quality. His collection included a wide selection of tribal art with well-documented provenance, several pieces of which are today considered reference objects within Dutch private collections.
