Monumental Nkisi Mangaaka (81 cm) with exceptional provenance and powerful ritual appearance.

Dating from around 1900-1910, this imposing Nkisi Mangaaka is a rare justice statue from the Congo tradition. Distinctive details such as the separated feet point to an early and authentic specimen. As a 'power figure', this type of statue functioned as an embodiment of justice, protection and ritual authority, often used to end conflicts or seal treaties. Similar Mangaaka statues are in collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Princeton University Art Museum, among others.

Origin & provenance
Originally from the collection of Mbehou, an influential Cameroonian art dealer active in the early 20th century, whose pieces can be found today in top museums such as the Barbier-Mueller Museum (Geneva) and the Louvre (Paris). Later acquired through Rootz Gallery, Deventer, and then sold by Morel Antiques. This gives this image an exceptionally strong provenance.

Cultural context
The Nkisi Mangaaka was the most powerful type of nkisi (power image) within Congo culture. Mangaaka statues acted as spiritual judges: they were used to administer justice, seal contracts and protect the community from injustice. Nails, blades or other objects were often driven into the torso as a ritual sign of an oath or agreement. The imposing appearance with spread feet, large stature and intense countenance expressed the authority of ancestors and spirits. These statues were not mere works of art, but functional pillars of law and order within Congo society.

Condition: clear signs of age, including a historical repair on the left foot, some cracks and surface wear appropriate to its age and use. These signs of use enhance the authenticity and ritual character of this unique sculpture.
