Unique Nyamwezi fertility statue from Tanzania with powerful appearance, ritual patina and impressive provenance.

This wooden female statue from the Lake Rukwa area shows a stately figure with expressive eyes, a stylised fan hairdo and hands towards the belly - a clear reference to fertility and protection. The statue has a rich, dark patina with clear signs of use. Note the wear marks and the repaired right arm, which underline its authenticity and ritual use.

Provenance
This sculpture belongs to the Nyamwezi culture from Tanzania and was acquired through De Zwaan Auction (Amsterdam) in 2023. Before that, it was part of the collection of Bryan Reeves (London), a renowned dealer in African art, since 2012. This proven provenance reinforces the value and collector status of this special object.

Culture & Meaning
The Nyamwezi are known for their ancestor statues that symbolise fertility, protection and connection with ancestors. Statues like this one were often placed in home shrines or used in ritual ceremonies. The female figure emphasises the importance of fertility and continuity within the clan, while the hairstyle refers to traditional hairstyles from the Lake Rukwa region.

Authentic signs of age, including a repaired right arm, cracking and scuffs appropriate for ritual use. The patina is deep and consistent, characteristic of prolonged ritual handling.
