Description
Rare Chinese porcelain Scheveningen plate from the Kangxi period (c. 1700) featuring the iconic Dutch beach scene and sophisticated blue painting.
Origin & meaning: Originally produced in Japan, this design is said to be based on a design by Dutch artist Frederik van Frytom (1632-1702). It is often called the 'Scheveningen' pattern, and sometimes 'Deshima Island' or 'Nabeshima' pattern. The Chinese versions, like this plate, had a characteristic wave decoration along the rim. Unmarked.
Dimensions: Diameter 20 cm, height 2.5 cm. Edge fritting and a hairline in the centre of the plate (see photos). Bought at Venduehuis The Hague in 2023. View all Scheveningen plates in our webshop.
