Description
Beautiful set of 2 Kangxi plates from China, late 17th century, with refined blue and white floral decoration and authentic signs of use.
This set shows characteristic Kangxi porcelain with an underglaze cobalt decor of flowering branches, tendrils and stylised flowers. The edges have slight frit marks: several on one plate and two on the other. These traces of use emphasise authenticity and add charm. Both plates are marked at the bottom with the classic artemisia leaf in underglaze blue, a recognisable mark from the Kangxi period.
Origin & meaning
The plates date from the high Qing dynasty under Emperor Kangxi (1662-1722), a period considered a high point in Chinese porcelain production. The floral decoration reflects refinement, symbolism and the craftsmanship of the kilns of Jingdezhen.
The artemisia leaf mark is a commonly used mark in the Kangxi period. Although it does not refer to a specific imperial commission, it was often applied as a quality mark on high-quality export porcelain. The artemisia leaf refers to the fragrant mugwort plant (Artemisia argyi), associated in Chinese culture with protection and purification. It floral design on these signs symbolises prosperity and harmony; flowers such as peony, chrysanthemum and prunus represent wealth, long life and resilience, respectively. Together, these symbols form a visual wish poem for well-being and happiness.
