Description

Authentic Vietnamese blue and white lidded box from the 15th-16th century - a sophisticated object with soft glaze tones and hand-painted decoration.

The box is carefully executed with an ornate pattern in cobalt blue on a light grey background. The decoration continues across the lid and wall, creating a harmonious whole. Despite its age, the condition is remarkably good; only slight signs of use befitting its age.

Origin & meaning
Blue-and-white ceramics from Vietnam from the 15th and 16th centuries were frequently traded to Southeast Asia and even the Middle East. These small lidded boxes often served as cosmetic or medicine boxes, but could also be used as luxury containers for spices. They reflect the sophisticated ceramic production of the Lê Dynasty and Vietnam's role in maritime trade.
