Description
Extraordinary Yoruba offering bowl from Nigeria with rooster, snake and cat - enriched by traces of indigo and ochre pigment. A ritual showpiece that is not only iconographically rich but also visibly bears the time and intention of use in its original colour accents.
Origin & meaning
Purchased from the collection of Hans van der Kamp (1949-2022), founder of Antiquariaat Minerva in The Hague-a reliable knowledge carrier in the world of African art. For the Yoruba, such a sacrificial bowl acted as a link between man and the spiritual realm. The rooster symbolises life force and transition, the snake spiritual renewal, and the cat mystery and intuition. The pigment remnants draw a direct line to that ritual past.
Dimensions
Height: 28 cm - width: 18.5 cm - depth: 18 cm
