These protective guard statues represent the classic duo Agy\u014d (with open maw, symbol of the beginning) and Ungy\u014d (with closed maw, symbol of the end). Origin & meaning<\/strong>
\nKomainu statues were traditionally placed at the entrance of Japanese temples and shrines to ward off evil spirits. They have their origins in Chinese and Korean lion statues, but were given an entirely unique symbolism and formal language in Japan. Their function as spiritual watchmen makes them particularly popular among collectors of Asian art.
