Specialist 1997 Sotheby's auction catalogue dedicated to Yixing teapots from the Chen Yang Collection, richly illustrated with photographs, maker's marks and detailed descriptions.

Yixing Teapots from the Chen Yang Collection was published by Sotheby's for the auction of this private collection in Taipei in 1997. The catalogue presents a comprehensive selection of Chinese Yixing teapots, thus forming an interesting reference work for collectors of zisha ceramics and Chinese tea culture.

Yixing teapots are crafted from the characteristic clay from the Yixing area in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. Within this collecting field, not only form, clay type and finish play an important role, but also the potters and their applied seal marks.

The individual pieces from the Chen Yang Collection have been photographed in colour and provided with catalogue descriptions. For several objects, the applied seals and maker's marks are also illustrated separately. This makes the catalogue particularly useful for comparing shapes, maker's marks, decorations and stylistic characteristics of Yixing teapots.

Besides its value as auction documentation, the catalogue offers a concentrated overview of a specialised collecting area within Chinese ceramics. The combination of clear photography, marks and a collection built entirely around Yixing makes this publication interesting as a reference work for collectors of Chinese ceramics and historical teapots.

The auction took place at Sotheby’s in Taipei on October 19, 1997. Sale TW7004.
