An important and now scarce standard work on seventeenth-century Jingdezhen porcelain, based on masterpieces from the Shanghai Museum and the famous collection of Sir Michael Butler. Seventeenth Century Jingdezhen Porcelain from the Shanghai Museum and the Butler Collections: Beauty’s Enchantment covers the development of Chinese porcelain during the turbulent transition from the Ming to the Qing dynasty.

Seventeenth-century Jingdezhen porcelain

The publication focuses on the period from the late Ming to the early Kangxi era and provides a comprehensive overview of the major changes that the Jingdezhen kilns underwent during this period.

Through 132 carefully selected objects, form, decoration, painting style, dating and historical context are covered. The objects originate from the collection of the Shanghai Museum and the internationally renowned Butler Collection.

The Butler Collection and the Shanghai Museum

Sir Michael Butler built one of the most important private collections of seventeenth-century Chinese porcelain. Together with the collection of the Shanghai Museum, the material in this publication provides an exceptional overview of so-called Transitional porcelain.

The objects are described in detail and richly illustrated in colour, showing bases and marks where possible. The catalogue was compiled for a joint exhibition by the Shanghai Museum and the Butler Collection.

Important reference work

Due to the combination of important objects, detailed descriptions and historical context, this publication is considered an essential reference work for collectors, dealers and researchers of Chinese porcelain, in particular transitional porcelain and seventeenth-century Jingdezhen porcelain.
