Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market – Jochem Kroes (ISBN 9789040083310)

Description

A monumental standard work on Chinese armourorial porcelain specially manufactured for Dutch families in the eighteenth century, written by Dr. Jochem Kroes. Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market documents hundreds of Chinese porcelain services with coats of arms of Dutch families and is considered an important reference work in the field of Chinese export porcelain made to order, heraldry and Chinese export porcelain.

Chinese armorial porcelain for the Netherlands

In the eighteenth century, the Dutch were among the principal European buyers of Chinese porcelain. Alongside regular export porcelain, tableware featuring family crests, monograms and other personal decorations was manufactured to order in China.

An estimated 600 to 700 such services were manufactured for the Dutch market. In this book, 455 services with Dutch family coats of arms are extensively described and documented.

Important reference work

Kroes combines research into the porcelain with heraldry and genealogical data of the families for whom the services were manufactured. This makes the book of importance not only to collectors of Chinese ceramics, but also to research into the VOC, Chinese export porcelain, heraldry, and the historical trade relations between the Netherlands and China.

Featuring hundreds of images, comprehensive descriptions, references and indices, this is a substantial specialist reference work for collectors, museums, auction houses and dealers in Chinese export porcelain.
