Exceptional set of two 19th-century catalogues with extensive illustrations of educational models and scientific apparatus, manufactured by the Polytechnisches Arbeits-Institut J. Schröder in Darmstadt.

The two parts of Illustrationen von Unterrichts-Modellen und Apparaten presenting an extensive range of models, instruments and apparatus manufactured for use in technical and scientific education. The many detailed illustrations show how abstract physical, mathematical and engineering principles were made comprehensible using tangible models.

Pictured are, among other things, mechanical models, geometric and mathematical aids, drawing and measuring instruments, and apparatus for teaching physics and engineering. Constructions and models for technical drawing and other practical applications are also covered. The images are not merely functional, but together form a remarkable visual overview of the development of technical education in the second half of the 19th century.

J. Schröder in Darmstadt specialised in the manufacture of such educational models and apparatus. At a time when technical and scientific education was growing significantly in importance, these models formed an important aid for schools, technical institutes and other educational institutions.

Nowadays, the catalogues are interesting as documentation of historical educational methods, as well as for their fine technical illustrations and the great variety of instruments and designs.
