Description

Authentic Luba-Hemba mask of a monkey from Congo with inlaid beads and powerful look. An intriguing collectible that embodies protection and ritual use.

Origin & meaning
This monkey mask belongs to the Luba-Hemba culture from the Democratic Republic of Congo. It depicts the chimpanzee, known in local tradition as 'Soko Mutu' - the monkey that has human features. Such masks were used during funeral rites and initiation ceremonies, serving as a spiritual protector and companion for the deceased. The geometric grooves and coloured beads reinforce the ritual connotation and emphasise the protective power of the mask.
