'The Nanking Cargo' auction catalogue - Christie's Amsterdam 1986, hardcover, approx. 272 pages. It documents the legendary auction of Chinese export porcelain and gold from the wreck of the VOC ship De Geldermalsen - known as “The Nanking Cargo”.
Origin & meaning
In 1752, the VOC ship De Geldermalsen sank in the South China Sea, laden with a huge cargo of porcelain and gold. In 1985, the wreck was discovered by Michael Hatcher, after which Christie's Amsterdam organised the world-famous auction in 1986. The catalogue has been a standard reference for collectors of Chinese export porcelain, VOC history and maritime finds ever since.
