Silver nautilus shell table pieces are among the most imaginative objects in late-19th-century European silversmithing. They connect naturalia and craftsmanship in a way that directly harks back to the tradition of the Wunderkammer: the cabinet in which nature, science and luxury came together.
The pair of silver table pieces shown here, made in Hanau around 1900, constitutes an exceptional example of this tradition.
Hanau silver and the tradition of the Wunderkammer
Hanau developed into an international centre for high-quality fantasy silver in the second half of the 19th century. Silversmiths consciously turned to Renaissance and Baroque forms, combining historical styles with a technically very high level of finishing.
Table pieces with nautilus shell were ideally intended for cabinets, collectors' rooms and representative interiors. The exotic shell acted as a wonder of nature, while the silver mount demonstrated the virtuosity of the goldsmith.
Gebrüder Dingeldein and sculptural sophistication
This pair was manufactured by Gebrüder Dingeldein, one of the most respected silver studios in Hanau. Their work is known for its combination of technical perfection and distinct sculpturalism.
The silver swans display an exceptional level of detail: finely engraved feathers, carefully chiselled floral motifs on the base and coloured cabochons that give the whole a lively, almost theatrical appearance. In the process, the natural markings of the nautilus shells form a warm and harmonious contrast to the silver.
Provenance, labels and dating
The presence of pseudo-guildmarks and the clear Dingeldein hallmark (oval with rad motif and letter D) indicate typical Hanau work from the period circa 1880-1910. These objects were produced for an international audience of collectors and connoisseurs who valued both historical references and luxury execution.
Within the context of Wunderkammer objects, this pair represents a particularly successful balance between naturalia, fantasy and craftsmanship.
