Description
Authentic Aboriginal boomerang with finely incised patterns - warm dark patina, rhythmic lines with herringbone and zigzag patterns and subtle dot decorations; rounded ends emphasise the handmade quality.
Origin & meaning
This boomerang was traditionally crafted by Aboriginal communities in Australia from hardwood. Boomerangs not only served as hunting weapons for kangaroos and birds, but also had a symbolic and ceremonial role. Decorative carving patterns refer to the Dreamtime (creation stories) and give the boomerang a spiritual dimension. They were often used in rituals, dances and as status objects within the community.
Provenance: Jan de Goede collection (Amsterdam); later purchased from De Zwaan auction house.
Dimensions & condition
56 cm long × 13 cm wide × 0.6 cm thick. Dark brown, even patina with signs of age; both sides richly incised and largely flawless. Light edge and surface wear appropriate to age; natural wood knot visible on one side; no cracks or fractures seen.
