Description

Penetrating Korwar skull statue from Papua with original human skull and striking blue beady eyes - a rare and powerful ancestral object with intense presence.

This authentic Korwar statue from Papua (Iran Jaya) makes an immediate impression with its compact, tense pose and direct, almost confrontational gaze. The human skull is firmly attached to the sculpted wooden support with plant fibres and natural resin. The wooden nose and especially the bright blue beady eyes give the image an exceptionally vivid appearance: the eyes seem to follow the space and reinforce the feeling that this is not a passive object, but an active presence.

The combination of materials - old wood with deep patina, the skull with visible signs of age and the subtly shiny blue beads - creates a powerful visual tension. The blue eyes are a rare and expressive detail within Korwar representations and emphasise the sculpture's role as a vigilant bearer of ancestral power and knowledge.

Origin & meaning
Korwar images Korwar statues are among the most iconic ancestral objects from Papua. They acted as a physical abode for the spirit of a deceased ancestor and played an active role in rituals, consultations and protective acts. The addition of a real skull gave the sculpture additional spiritual authority. The inlaid eyes, here executed in blue beads, reinforce the idea of sight, consciousness and constant presence within the community.

This specimen dates from around 1900-1940 and comes from a Dutch collection. Its convincing age, rare combination of skull and beady eyes and strong sculptural form make this Korwar statue a decidedly high-end piece within a serious tribal art collection.
