Description
Rare Massim figurine from the Trobriand Islands (Papua New Guinea), late 19th century, with subdued seated pose and fine incision decoration in which traces of lime are still visible. The compact form and quiet expression give the piece a spiritual, intimate feel.
Origin & meaning
Originating from the Trobriand Islands (Massim cultures), acquired from Venduehuis The Hague (2024). An old collector's sticker at the bottom indicates an early collection history. Such figures had a ritual/ ancestral function within Massim tradition; the chalk-filled carving motifs are characteristic of Milne Bay work and emphasise their ceremonially used nature.
Dimensions & condition
Height c. 23.5 cm; base c. 6 × 5.5 cm; weight c. 0.37 kg. Traces of chalk in the incision decoration clearly visible; light, usual signs of age appropriate to age; old collector's sticker preserved at bottom. Condition: good, authentic condition.
