Description
Monumental Nias panel with powerful ancestral images, deeply carved on both sides and with an impressive spiritual presence. This exceptionally large wooden panel (140 cm high!) depicts in three registers a series of ancestors wearing ceremonial headdresses, ritual objects in their hands and beautifully worn surfaces - exactly the type of sculptural work that collectors of Nias art immediately recognise.
Carved from solid wood, the figures display a warm, dark brown patina with traces of age, use and ritual touch. In the details, we see pronounced headdresses, powerful facial features, symmetrical registrations of fingers and feet and small variations per ancestor figure that point to a long iconographic tradition within Southern Nias. The back is also fully carved - a rare feature that makes this panel sculpturally a full 360° object.
Origin & meaning
The panel was reportedly collected in the 1980s-1990s by a Dutch missionary on Nias, Indonesia. Such panels were part of high-status architectural structures, such as adat houses, and acted as spiritual bearers of ancestral protection. The powerful expression, ritualistic postures and repetition of motifs (“kneeling ancestors with sacrificial objects”) allude to themes of continuity, protection and connection to the ancestral lineage.
For Nias collectors, a work with so many figures (9 on the front and 8 on the back) is considered a rare find, especially in this format and with such a monumental presence.
Dimensions & condition
Height 140 cm, width 49 cm, depth 23 cm. Weight approx. 28 kg. The panel shows signs of age, cracks, small gaps and natural erosion appropriate to its age and use. This condition enhances the authenticity of the work. The wooden base construction is modern and intended for stabilisation during presentation.
