Description
Special Korwar ancestor statue from Papua, rare in this quality and with strong spiritual radiance.
This authentic wooden Korwar statue, from the collection of Jac Hoogerbrugge, shows a characteristic ancestor figure with geometrically open-worked chest. The powerful facial features, high nose bridge and serene pose reflect the traditional style of the north-western coast of New Guinea.
Origin & meaning
Korwars served as spiritual guardians in which the soul of an ancestor was represented and honoured. They acted as a medium between the living and the dead and were consulted at important events. The perforations and traces of insect bites on this specimen indicate considerable age and ritual use marks, reinforcing its authenticity. Provenance: collection Jac Hoogerbrugge, acquired at Oriental Art Auctions.
