Description
Unique Korwar wooden ancestor statue from Geelvink Bay, Papua (Indonesia), a powerful ritual object with striking ritual details.
Origin & meaning
This statue (31 cm high) comes from the region of Geelvink Bay (Cenderawasih Bay), where it traditionally served as the abode of the ancestor spirit. Korwar figures were crucial in the spiritual culture of the Biak and Numfor peoples and were consulted during important life events. The geometric patterns and blue bead eyes are typical of this style area, as is the robust, expressive design that symbolises both protection and connection.
