Extraordinary Korwar sculpture from Geelvinkbaai, Papua (Indonesia), with intense spiritual radiance. This 27 cm tall wooden statue shows a powerful expression and fine patina, signs of ritual use. The deep eyes and robust forms emphasise the presence of an ancestor who embodies this piece.
Origin & meaning
Korwar figurines were made by the Biak peoples of Geelvink Bay to honour deceased ancestors and access their spiritual power. They served as protectors and spiritual counsellors for the community. This specimen was purchased from Venduhuis The Hague, which enhances the provenance experience and increases its collector's value.
