This wooden ancestor statue from the Moluccas shows a seated ancestor with arms tight around the knees, gaze focused forward. The expressive face shape, elongated nose and deep eye sockets with spiral inlays give the statue an almost hypnotic presence. Atop the head rises a spectacular, openwork bird crown, consisting of stylised bird motifs with finely incised patterns. This ancestor statue comes from the southeastern Moluccas (Maluku, Indonesia) and was collected by a Dutch missionary in the 1980s-1990s. Such wooden ancestor statues served as mediators between the living community and the world of ancestors. The bird crown above the head probably refers to guardian spirits and the soul's journey between the different layers of the cosmic universe. In many islands of the Moluccas, birds symbolise communication with the spirit world as well as status and protection. The spiral inlay eyes reinforce the idea of an all-seeing ancestor watching over home and family.
