Description
Lavishly illustrated French auction catalogue by Alain Castor and Laurent Hara bringing together two auctions at Drouot Richelieu in Paris from June 2014: tribal art and pre-Columbian art.
The first part documents the auction of 13 June 2014 and includes a broad selection of tribal and non-Western art from Africa, Oceania, the Himalayas, Island Southeast Asia and Aboriginal Australia. The various sculptures, masks, ritual objects and other items demonstrate the great diversity of materials, forms and regional styles within these collecting areas.
The second part is devoted to the auction of pre-Columbian art of 16 June 2014. In this, archaeological art objects from various cultures of Central and South America are presented, including ceramics and sculptures.
The lots have been extensively photographed in colour and provided with French-language catalogue descriptions. These include the cultural origin, material, dimensions and dating, and where available also provenance and additional background information.
By bringing together two different collecting areas in a single publication, the catalogue forms an interesting visual reference work for both tribal and pre-Columbian art. The numerous illustrations are useful for comparing object types, regional styles and materials, while at the same time documenting what was on offer in the Paris art market in 2014.
The two auctions took place at Drouot Richelieu in Paris on 13 and 16 June 2014.
