Description

A ceremonial throne that immediately captures the imagination: richly cast in brass, supported by a circle of figures and crowned with an impressive king's figure - a rare and powerful masterpiece from Cameroon.

This magnificent throne tells an entirely sculptural story. Six elongated bearer figures lift the circular platform as if supporting a ritual stage. On the platform stands a monarch with monumental posture and richly decorated chest, flanked by two figures with stern, self-conscious poses. The armrests are formed by felines standing on human figures - a beautiful play between animal strength and human connection.

The warm brass patina, subtle dark accents and deep engravings give the piece an almost sacred feel. The base, composed of heads from which the supporting figures rise, enhances the vertical dynamic of the piece as a whole. This is one of those objects that transforms a room: ideal for a Wunderkammer, a high-quality African art collection or as a sculptural eye-catcher with museum allure.

Origin & meaning
Ceremonial thrones like these were reserved for chiefs and kings in the Grassfields region of Cameroon. Brass symbolises status, wealth and spiritual authority. The many figures refer to community, protection and ritual hierarchy. The felines function as sentinels; the king figure embodies the mediator between the earthly and the spiritual. This throne was purchased in 1977 from Italiaander Galleries on Herengracht in Amsterdam and was subsequently part of the collection of Fred Smit (Haarlem).

Dimensions & condition
106 cm high, 42 cm wide, 43 cm deep. The throne is in a beautiful patina with slight signs of age and subtle oxidation in the brass - entirely appropriate for age and use. No disturbing damage; the object is visually strong, fully sculptural and excellent for gallery-worthy presentation.
