Description
Set of three manila bronze bracelets from West Africa, 16th-19th century, with rich patina and powerful shapes. These historic bracelets were both worn as jewellery and used as trade money.
Origin & meaning
Manila money was a form of premonetary money in West Africa. They were used to trade goods, as dowries and on ritual occasions. Their circulation was through European trade routes from the 16th century onwards and they are known as an important example of tribal bronze bracelets. This set comes from a private collection in Castricum.
Dimensions & condition
The set consists of three bracelets:
- 7.5 × 7.5 × 2.5 cm
- 7.8 × 7.8 × 2.5 cm
- 8.5 × 8.5 × 1.5 cm
Condition: signs of use and a natural patina befitting their age.
