Refined Chokwe Pwo mask from Angola/DR Congo with authentic copper inlay-a ritual object brimming with symbolism.
Origin & meaning: This elegant Pwo mask, made by the Chokwe people, embodies loving remembrance of important female ancestors. It was worn during initiation rites by men in honour of women who exemplified beauty, wisdom and fertility. The copper inlay, soft shape and serene expression reinforce this ritual significance and emphasise the mask's deep-rooted cultural value.
Size & condition:
Without stand: 40 × 21 × 14 cm;
with stand: 54 cm high.
Condition: The mask is in nice old condition with a vibrant patina: the wooden parts show natural discolouration and light wear around the edges, copper accents are preserved but with oxidation/discolouration, and the scarification lines have remained sharp with no visible modern repairs.
