Description

Authentic Gurunsi antelope mask from Burkina Faso with imposing horns and powerful patina. An impressive collector's piece that breathes the ritual imagery of West Africa.

Origin & meaning
This mask belongs to the rich tradition of the Gurunsi and related Bwa peoples of Burkina Faso. Antelope masks are used during initiation rites, harvest festivals and dance ceremonies. The geometric patterns and white kaolin layer symbolise harmony, fertility and protection from evil influences. The long horns refer to the antelope's strength and agility, a beloved animal in the cosmology of the Gurunsi.
