Description

Powerful Baule statue of a woman from Ivory Coast, with dark patina and impressive appearance.

This Baule sculpture depicts a female figure with attention to detail: the hairstyle is carefully carved, the pose understated and the wood grain is expertly used to give the sculpture extra character. The black patina emphasises the elegant forms and testifies to ritualistic use. At the feet, it is still clearly visible how the artist freed the sculpture from the block of wood.

Origin & meaning
Baule statues often served as spiritual guides and embodiments of inner forces. They were used in rituals to promote protection, fertility and harmony. This statue, with its calm and dignified appearance, fits right into that tradition. Originating from Côte d'Ivoire and purchased at Auction House de Zwaan (2024), it makes a wonderful collector's item for connoisseurs of African art.
