Description
Lavishly illustrated standard work by Christiaan J.A. Jörg on famille verte, the characteristic Chinese porcelain with predominantly green enamel colours from the late 17th and early 18th century.
Famille Verte: Chinese Porcelain in Green Enamels was published in 2011 to coincide with the exhibition of the same name at the Groninger Museum. Christiaan J.A. Jörg, a specialist in Chinese export porcelain and the historical trade between China and Europe, discusses the development, manufacture and decoration of famille verte porcelain.
The name famille verte refers to the characteristic palette in which various shades of green are combined with red, yellow, blue and black, among other colours. This style of decoration reached its peak during the Kangxi period (1662–1722). The book pays attention to the techniques used, decorative motifs, shapes and functions of the porcelain, and also places the objects in the context of Chinese production and export to Europe.
A large number of objects from the collection of the Groninger Museum are extensively illustrated and described. Dishes, plates, bowls, vases and other forms demonstrate the great variety of designs and decorations within famille verte. The catalogue texts contain information on, among other things, dating, shape, design and the background of the individual pieces.
Due to the combination of a scientific background, detailed object descriptions and high-quality photography, the book is an important reference work for collectors and enthusiasts of Chinese porcelain, in particular famille verte and Chinese export porcelain from the Kangxi period.
