Impressive female Bamana ancestor statue from West Africa, with elegant proportions, deep geometric carvings and a serene, timeless look that instantly appeals to collectors.

This monumental sculpture (158 cm high) depicts an exceptionally slender, stylised female figure with long arms, prominent bust, characteristic Bamana facial structure and a rich geometric pattern that continues all the way around the body. Photographs show beautifully weathered patina, subtle sheen on the cut edges, old insect holes and some vertical drought cracks - precisely the elements that make authentic ritual Bamana sculptures so beloved of connoisseurs.

The head is narrow and tall, with strongly projected cheekbones, cylindrical earpieces and finely notched hairlines. The torso is completely covered with fine geometric decor (zigzag, cross-hatching, line bands), typical of prestige and ancestor iconography within the Bamana. The legs are long and sleek, ending on an oval pedestal that gives stability to the tall statue. At the back, a broad back groove is visible with deep, older cracks - a feature befitting age, use and drying out of the wood.

Origin & meaning
The Bamana (Mali) are known for sculptures symbolising ancestral roles, fertility, protection or social status. Female sculptures like these were often associated with ancestor worship, the Jo or Gwan cult and rituals around regeneration and community. The geometric patterns refer to order, continuity and social structure within Bamana communities.

Dimensions & condition
Height 158 cm, width 27 cm, depth 25 cm.
The sculpture is in nice ethnographic condition: old drought cracks, some older insect holes (inactive), light surface wear and patina gloss on the protruding parts. No modern restorations visible. The condition suits age and traditional use and enhances the authenticity and charm of this large statue.
