Description

Impressive Fon statue from Benin, covered in shells, textiles and rope, with a lock on its head - circa 1960-1970.

This powerful Vodun object bears traces of intensive ritual use. The wood is lined with layers of textile and rope, decorated with shells and covered with blue paint residue. The most striking detail is the metal lock on the head, symbolising sealed spiritual power. Traces of ritual sacrifice are visible all over the surface, in the form of crusting, patina and discolouration.

Origin & meaning
The Fon from Benin are known for their Vodun tradition. Such statues, also called bocio, were used as protectors and spiritual bearers. The lock on the head symbolises that spiritual power is bound and can only be accessed by the initiated. Shells refer to prosperity and the connection with ancestors, while rope and textiles bind and strengthen spiritual layers.
